Scottish blackface sheep
Also known as: Blackface, Blackfaced Highlands, Scottish Mountain, Scotch Highland & Horn
Monks in the 12th century raised sheep that are the progneistors of the modern Scottish Blackface breed. The wool was used for their own clothing. Today the blackface is one of the most important breeds in the British Isles.
The Blackfaces epitomizes the mountain sheep. They have long wool that covers them from moisture and biting winds. Blackfaces can survive the hardest winters in the most extreme places.
The lambs will be defended by their mothers against predators. The blackface rams have good dispositions but should always give rams respect during the breeding season.
Our sheep are usefull in the sense that they are improving the value of our pastures.
Of course the look of the Blackface stole our hearts and our Border Collies seem to like them too. (personal feelings through the shepherd's eye)
The meat is free of extra fat and is known in the world for it's flavour.
Scottish Blackface wool is used in the production of fine carpets, mattress stuffing (think about it - how sweet and soft). Also in the manufacture of Irish and Scottish tweeds. Handspinners like the wool to use it in tapestry and rugs. And not to disregard also saddle blankets
Another treasure are the horns of the Blackface.
Used for Shepherds crooks and walking sticks
An art I truly admire and enjoy (see my work).
I noticed that Blackies are smart sheep, if they stand still somewhere - be sure that they are thinking the whole situation through. Might be a new breakaway, or perhaps "how to trick the dogs".
More to come…
